The South African football fraternity is mourning the loss of the former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana midfielder John 'Dungi' Moeti, who passed away in the early hours of Monday morning.

On Monday, John Moeti's family confirmed the passing of the decorated Bafana and Bucs legend. 

Aged 55, Moeti's death came after a battle with a long illness that he's been receiving specialist treatment for since last year. 

Moeti's accomplished career saw him make two stints at the Buccaneers, where he won the 1995 CAF Champions League, and the following year, he was part of Bafana's 1996 AFCON-winning side. 

He also played for Dynamos and SuperSport United before hanging up his boots at the end of the 2000/01 season.

Moeti's former teammate, Thabo Mngomeni paid a glowing tribute to his fellow Buccaneer. He hailed the dynamic Moeti as one of the best captains to have ever led the Sea Robbers.
