‘It’s the best time to play Downs’

Cape Town City midfielder Thabo Nodada feels that now is the best time to play Mamelodi Sundowns as they look to get past their formidable opponents and reach a second successive MTN8 final.
The two teams square off in the first leg of this year’s MTN8 semi-final on Saturday, with Downs heading into the fixture on the back of a 1-0 CAF Champions League defeat to Wydad Casablanca last weekend and a goalless Absa Premiership draw against Highlands Park.
Having failed to score in either of those games, Nodada feels this gives City a chance to get one over their Pretoria rivals, who beat them in both their previous encounters this year, though he is well aware of the quality they possess in their squad.
“If there was ever a time to play them, this would be the best time,” he said. “But I think they have enough depth and quality in their squad to come with a fairly strong squad to face us. But as a team we are ready for the challenge and should prepare just as well, and try dominate rather than worry about them.”
Nodada feels City got stronger in the transfer window, where they brought in the likes of Peter Leewenburgh, Riyaad Norodien, Gift Links and Siphelele Mthembu. He believes the recruits will soon shine in their new colours.
“They have strengthened us a lot,” he said. “There are people who still want to prove themselves, and prove their ability and talents. They cannot come to a better team than us, who is always fighting to be in the top four and top three in the country. We’ve made good acquisitions, they are fitting in well, and you will soon see their deeds.”
Kick-off at Cape Town Stadium is set for 15h00 on Saturday.
