Orlando Pirates boss Irvin Khoza confirms the signing of Luis Boa Morte

Boa Morte joins Pirates

Posted: 2012-01-24 12:27

Orlando Pirates boss Irvin Khoza has confirmed the signing of Luis Boa Morte on an 18-month deal.

Morte, an ex-Portuguese international, previously turned out for Arsenal and West Ham United in the UK.

The 34-year old won the English Premier League in 1998 with Arsenal and reunites with ex-West Ham teammate Benni McCarthy at the club.

Boa Morte was until recently in the books of Greek club, Larrissa but his contract was reportedly terminated at the European club and McCarthy convinced him to come down to South Africa.

Khoza says: "I must thank Benni McCarthy, who made me aware of the desire of Luis to play for Pirates… He is now owned by the spiritual owners of the team."

Boa Morte says: "I'm happy to be here to continue my football career and hopefully I will remain here for many seasons as long as I'm fit."

Something is definetely wrong with our Chairman yes we need the exprience whose position will this guy play in ,nogal he is 34 years old, is our team becoming a an old age home for overseas madalas

FISTOS: 2012-01-24 12:39

Yerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr ! Sies Chibuku FC. Now they are turning our country into the new Qatar were retired soccer players go to suplement their pensions. I hear Jay Jay Okocha and Nwan*ko Kanu are also having talks with Irvin Khoza.

Tzozo: 2012-01-24 12:42

Let's face it. This Boa Morte guy was never a top-of-the range striker even during his playing days. What now in his retirement days ?

Nywereza: 2012-01-24 12:43

Call it what ever, and experience the best teacher to success. To play in champions league and sometimes on rough turf or grounds one needs experience.

Nywereza: 2012-01-24 12:45

It is a good call by the chairman to reinforce with the experience for the sole purpose to success.

while others look at his age, we look at the opportunities that will come with his presence.

With Morte, Bennie,Mhlongo n Legwathi we are certain that the boys will be inspired and will learn from those who played at the highest level n locally.

Morte, do what Benni did, score goals n then goes the noise.

Any club would choose Morte over Majoro, Parker or Kaizer lipstick.

He does n't have to be taught anything, he is a ready made, that need fitness.

Mgugudi: The Treble Addict: 2012-01-24 12:53

Again, hobos who do not understand the demands of playing in our beautiful continent are having a go at the Champs. Win the league 1st (unless you have, after turning the corner with only 6 matches in the season) then talk.

Very little has been happening in SA as far as knowledge desemination is concerned. We recycle coaches who contribute nothing to the SA football knowledge systems. If the likes of Benni & Morte can part their knowledge & change the psych of the likes of Tlou, Mashego & other young players, I support Khoza fully.

Mr T: 2012-01-24 12:55

not a good news to SA football development and entire Africa.

I will agree with you King if you say he is a finished ready made material, that's why he decided to join the home of madalas.

Congrats Dr. Khoza for making another HISTORIC signing. Let's not worry about the spiteful animals from Nazoorena who always spew udoti on this site on our columns. If the table were the other way around, they'd be jumping and singing Hlokoloza like no tomorrow.

Now all that Khoza needs to do is have Boa Morte's name registered for the playas going to compete in Africa.

Aah, life is sweet while Chimps Funeral has been busy calling us to sell us their cheap funeral plan. Thanks, but NO THANKS!!! We're fine with our life cover of endless happiness via the trophies we keep collecting non-stop.

Nothing against the man but just glad he didn't join Chiefs.

Even if he does well but signing on rumor its 30% success vs 70% failure.Pirates plays quick attacking game hence players like Clifford Ngobeni struggled as they are slow.Bennie McCarthy is also slow but he compensate that with awareness of his surrounding & improvises with passing.

Matt/ Tremble4DaTrebleChamps: 2012-01-24 13:00

How old is Majoro - what value does he add at Chiefs

How old is Parker - what has he achieved - why did he fail abroad - what value does he add at Chiefs

How old is Kaizer Jnr - Does he deserve to play for Chiefs or even soccer.

How old is Ngcobo - Why is he joining Platinum stars - what value is he adding at Chiefs.

These are just simple questions - Morte played at the very highest of the highest levels, he has a lot to offer.

Nothing against the man but just glad he didn't join Chiefs.

the difference between Pirates and Chiefs signings is that Pirates wants to defend trophies and win the Africa Champions Cup (demands vast experience) while Chiefs wants to try to win the domestic league(your Majoros&Masangos can achieve that)!

He models the dread locks for Juniors salon.

How old is Parker - what has he achieved - why did he fail abroad - what value does he add at Chiefs

Parker is a taxi driver that parks cars at KC. He has achieved a lot by using his expirience to park by just parking in the field of play without doing anything of note except to come out of parking hibbernation to score those gqubule penalties.

How old is Kaizer Jnr - Does he deserve to play for Chiefs or even soccer.

It's ungentleman like to ask a woman her age. He did not apply nor got voted for to play for daddy's team but she is a brilliant make-up artist.

How old is Ngcobo - Why is he joining Platinum stars - what value is he adding at Chiefs.

I have just ask my 5 year old son who Ngcobo is. He can't remeber him so he is just a rotten cabbage that VV did not cook yesterday. Can a veggie add value?

As for Morte, just like I did/do with Bartlett(then 36yrs when he joined chips),shoes (then 37yrs when he joined chips), currently Bartman 40yrs, Tendai(tinashe) 34, I will judge him based on his performances and nothing else. Doomsayers made noise about Benni`s age when he joined Pirates but were only interested in paka`s performances. We know how far have these two fared thus far in their respective teams.

Caf Rule!So Pirates is only concerned abt Champions league according to you?

I'm giving my opinion on what will make Morte to fit into Pirates play, not if Chiefs is better or what.

If Boa Morte is slow he will struggle at Pirates.Maybe at Chiefs he would play.

But b4 u get judgemental & mis read my post, all I'm saying is Pirates midfielders are all attack minded, even defensive ones. This excludes Ngobeni as he is more on defensive than also attacking & if Boa Morte is slow he will have an impact in taking a ball forward quickly.

Simple as that.Give ur reasons on football, not on because ur Pirates & I'm Chiefs.

u sometimes use them to lower the tempo of the game or bring in a different dimension to the game.

chuck: 2012-01-24 15:39

The same comments came after the Benni signing...Khoza is looking beyond performance on the pitch, the influence such players have in the psychological aspects of the game are invaluable.I wouldnt be surprised if Benni was made a 'striker coach' or given some role in the team where his experience will be utilized.I may not agree with most of the decisions taken by the club but i have learned to trust in the chairman as he has proven that he knows what he is doing. The is a reason why pirates has been winning everything and you can lie to yourself and call it luck just to console yourself but deep down inside you know it is due to proper management and hunger in that team...
