The Premier Soccer League and broadcasting giant SuperSport International have agreed a new five-year television rights deal worth “well over” R2 billion.
The League's chairman Dr. Irvin Khoza made the announcement earlier today at the PSL offices in Parktown, Johannesburg. The deal will take effect at the beginning of the 2012/13 season.
The previous television rights deal, signed in 2007, was worth R1.6 billion.
The tender had been sent out for relevant broadcasters to bid, but spokesperson of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), Kaizer Kganyago, was reportedly quoted saying the SABC didn't have the financial power to fork out R1.6 billion for the rights let alone the R2 billion SuperSport International have parted with now.
SuperSport also have mobile and internet rights.
