Bucs win the Carling Black Label Cup

Orlando Pirates beat Kaizer Chiefs in Carling Black Label Cup

Posted: 30 July 2011 Time: 05:53 pm

Orlando Pirates are the first winners of the Carling Black Label Cup following a 4-3 penalty shootout win against Kaizer Chiefs at Soccer City on Saturday afternoon.

The preseason match, which allowed supporters to pick the starting XIs and one player to be substituted via SMS votes, was played at a high pace and intensity, but ultimately finished goalless after 90 minutes.

Chiefs could have found themselves reduced to 10 men early on when striker Lucky Khune blatantly directed the ball into the back of Pirates’ net via his hand. Had the match been anything more than a preseason friendly, the younger Khune brother would surely have been sent off by referee Victor Hlungwani – instead he received only a yellow card.

The Amakhosi line-up featured no genuine defensive midfielders and their lack of balance in the middle of the park allowed Bucs to boss the game for most of the first half.

Yet Chiefs almost snatched the lead against the run of play in the 26th minute when Sthembiso Ngcobo got away a snap shot from the edge of the penalty area, only for Moeneeb Josephs to pull off a good save low to his right.

Itumeleng Khune was only called on to make his first genuine save in the opening seconds of the second half, parrying a fierce drive from Bongani Ndulula straight up into the air before recovering it at the second attempt.

Chiefs introduced Tinashe Nengomasha after the break to add some physicality to their midfield, but his first contribution was an offensive one, putting Abia Nale through on goal with a great pass. Unfortunately for the team in gold and black, Nale was unable to beat Josephs.

The ‘supporter substitutions’ took place just under ten minutes after the restart, with strikers Chiukepo Msowoya and Sthembiso Ngcobo being voted off by Pirates and Chiefs fan respectively.

The Buccaneers brought on winger Sameehg Doutie while Amakhosi gave new signing Bernard Parker his first outing in a Kaizer Chiefs jersey.

Neither side was able to find a goal in the 90 minutes, so the game went straight to a penalty shootout.

After Pirates had converted four of their five penalties, it was left to Itumeleng Khune to try and keep Chiefs in the contest and send the shootout to sudden death, but he blazed his spot kick over the crossbar.

Chiefs: (4-4-2) I Khune; Mashamaite (Ritchie 60’), Sweswe, Isaacs, Molekwane; Dladla (Mateba 71’), Letsholonyane (Nengomasha 46’), Tshabalala, Nale (Lebese 60’ [Sibeko 75’]); L Khune (Majoro 40’), Ngcobo (Parker 55’)

Pirates: (4-4-2) Josephs; Jele, Mahamutsa, Lekgwathi, Cloete (Mjempu 90+3’); Mbuyane, Jali, Manyisa, Mayambela (Segolela 63’); Ndulula (Mabalane 82’), Msowoya (Doutie 54’)

Penalty sequence: Manyisa scores 1-0, Tshabalala scores 1-1; Jele scores 2-1, Parker scores 2-2; Doutie misses 2-2, Ritchie misses 2-2; Mahamutsa scores 3-2, Sibeko scores 3-3; Lekgwathi scores 4-3, I. Khune misses 4-3.

Who was that guy on the KC bench? Was it all PSL Penties, McD, Guccie or S/javo? If it was one of you guys, Iam disappointed. How can you allow VV to shut you up like that? You are so vocal in this site to the extent of insulting the champions but scared of alVVina.

Khune,do you want to join the champs & link up with Benni as well as galaxy of stars?

Sorry Mr. ref, you tried your best to give the cup to Chiefs.

I won't celebrate this victory. This game was very boring. Chiefs cheating methods were still no match for the mighty bucs. The young khune got injured at the begining of the game like we said he would. Both keepers were not tested. I wanna see pirates play other teams. Stronger teams. I can't wait for next week, not this crap. Ghost

chiefs players ddnt play their hearts out, m so disgusted abwt the kind of futball they played today, they were sitting at the back for the whole second half and their so-called stars did their best to make sure that we lose the game, it started wth Shaba fortunately the ref bear wth us and khune just hit the bar purposely, for me i think these players ddnt take ths cup seriously they were jst playin for the sake of playing and w dnt condone such a behaviour for the players whu are employed ful-tym by the club, fuck bayanyisa, they hav it on their heads that they are called stars of s.a futball, mxm

Re tla Shapa modisa ho qhalane dinku, no no that doesn't sound right, lets start again, Re tla Shapa dinku ho qhalane modisa, that sounds like it. Zebra Forces must get used to the hiding even if we were to play for a sheep. They must get used to the abusive Bucselona, have nightmares whenever they think about us.

Consolation is that, there will be peace and quiet around the country as they will be busy leaking their wounds..

Speaking base on what i have seen fron vodacom challenge and i bhigiri yo tswala, Pirates is very good and jelling for 5 trophies this season. the only thing needed in the team is a good striker that can converte all the chances to goals.

Once Mayambela was taken Off Zebras started to play... he is given a free role, whats that suppose to mean? That he is allowed to roam around causing havoc. The only problem with him is tha he has a heavy pass and is eager to impress. He should be given time and also the movement off the ball upfront is really not good, Ndulula doesn't move around off the ball and he tries too manny tricks when he has the ball. So please look at the tactical side of the game before you comment.
