RIP Eddie Lewis

Posted: 2 May 2011 Time: 14:04

Moroka Swallows technical advisor Eddie Lewis has died of cancer in a Johannesburg hospital after the illness spread to various parts of his body.

Lewis, who was one of the original ‘Busby Babes’ at Manchester United, first sold insurance in South Africa before embarking on successful stints in charge of both Wits University and Kaizer Chiefs during the mid-1970s.

In later years, he was in charge of outfits like Giant Blackpool and Moroka Swallows whom he guided to the 1989 Bob Save Super Bowl, having earlier brought joy to Wits and Chiefs.

Wits won the 1978 Mainstay Cup under his tutorage as they overcame Chiefs with Lewis regarding this as the highlight of his career.

The former Manchester United defender also coached Sharp Highlands Park, D’Alberton Callies, Manning Rangers and AmaZulu but in recent years, his health had declined, and although he fought furiously to overcome the disease, having endured a number of operations, he is now at rest.

Those who knew and witnessed Eddie's sickness and health in recent past months would say the old man is completely healed. That the would be no better healing for him than this one.
My sincere condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and his loved ones. May his soul rest in peace!
