Sacked Zobel speaks out

Fired Swallows coach Zobel speaks out

Posted: 28 November 2010 Time: 2:31 pm

German coach Rainer Zobel believes it was logical to step aside after the draw with SuperSport United, to give his successor enough time to prepare for Moroka Swallows’ next game against Santos in a fortnight.

“I think now is the right time to leave because there are 14 days before the next match which gives whoever is coming in enough time to prepare the team his way.

“The agreement was obviously that I get four points from two games and even though we drew tonight and could have still won the next game to get those four points it makes logical sense to step down now.

“The next coach must have enough time before the next match. It is the right decision to make way now for professional reasons. The decision is right to leave now. I am still going to stick around in Johannesburg and I have to discuss what I can do while I am here.

“Maybe I can now sit down and have a beer and travel around to see the beauty of South Africa. I love this country but the next 10 days will really clear what happens next with me.

“Maybe I should go back to Germany, I don’t know.”

Strangely, Zobel contends that the situation at Swallows shows that he is in fact a good coach.

“This is the third time that this kind of thing is happening to me in 30 years as a coach. If I wasn’t a good coach then this kind of thing will not be happening. I am proud that the players still kept on working the same way up to this week.

“I have known for the past five days what he consequence of this result would be. The only thing that I did after the match was call my wife and tell her that I am no longer the coach and then she said she knows already because she has been on the internet. I think she was more nervous than me,” Zobel says.

The cigarette-smoking mentor points to the MTN8 Cup Final loss against Orlando Pirates as the main cause of their struggles.

“The cup Final loss is what led to us struggling the way we have done in the League so far. That cup Final defeat took a lot out of these boys and I could see it the day of the Final in the dressing-room after the match.

“Some players stood to earn in just that one match more than they earn the whole year so I am sure you understand the effects of that kind of thing. But I am glad that the players were gradually recovering from that in recent weeks,” he says.

Despite a chorus of disapproval from some players in then Birds squad about his man management, Zobel says he feels ‘some players’ always played for him up until last night.

“There was no special strategy for this game. The players were motivated to win this game but sometimes luck is not on your side … I feel that tonight some players not only played for themselves but also for me. I was relaxed ahead of this game because that is how I wanted my players to be.

“It was the right decision to be relaxed and respect the law of football … the unwritten laws that if you are in a situation like mine it is only natural that you make space for someone else,” he concludes.

"maybe I can sit down & have a beer..." " the cigarette-smoking mentor " ... Hehehe, you guys crack me up !!! But I think this is a job 4 Mlungisi Proffessor Ngubane, he knows how to take a team out of these situations, no disrespect to Gordon, but he only knows how to take a team thats already in the top 3 to the league, he is basically a "finisher", whereas, @ FSS , he struggled ... If not Proffessor, then Mushin is my next option. Ps. How much do the swallows players earn then if 4m divided between them all is more than they earn the whole year ...

It now shows why Dr Khoza does not go about announcing winning bonuses. Professional teams like Ezimnyama have a bonus structure, not the grand standing announcements to the detriment of psychological preparation of the team' season!

Zobel is history and he had a lot of excuses. There is a life for him after Swallows.'That cup MTN Final defeat took a lot out of these boys and im 100% dissagree. Its one of his excuses every weekend.
Gordon's experience will add a big value to the team.He needs to bring back confidence to players and Swallows will fly again.Finish and klaar.

Now here is a good example of pure class. A man who gets fired, but yet still manages to keep his cool and not point fingures on his downfall as a coach. Even though the results were not coming, I am certain that the bulk of the players did walk away with something from his experience, for which I think, it will serve as an inspiration in their playing careers.

Gordon will still fail...honestly speaking swallows have got no Depth in all departments. They heavily rely in one man.....they should have signed quality Players for u Rainer.Swallows is a big club they shndt be using mediocre players like Kobola,Nergazhe and company.the only quality player is Nomvethe,i dnt even know why they signed Ritson and Kanyenda instead of Shabangu Lerato atleast.......Ritson is a NFD material

Zobel should be applauded for his professionalism.

Thank you Rainer for contributing to our soccer in general, i'm sure some of the younger players benefitted from your mentorship.

P.S: I love your honesty and your frankness. Good luck, chuck!!

Good bye coach.

I dont knw anything abt coaching bt ur game strategy was the worst of all de playing strategies i've ever seen in soccer.

How do u play a ball between ur goalminder nd the opposition's goalminder, wat about de middle of de park, Nx!! if dat's how um do things in Germany then i'll understand why ur national team is strugling 2 win world cup.

Plz take a seat ndatch Gordon doing wonders wit Swallows, make sure dat u r sober wen u watch him.

Honourable Minister of Home Affairs, Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini may you please step in by instructing your officials to visit Mr. Zobel to remind him about his work permit invalidity after his employment was terminated. And please deport him back to his native country.
Please do like wise with other coaches who remains in our country eventhough their contract of employment were terminated.
These foreign coaches should stop telling us lies that they love our country whereas they know they love our money.
I think its time both the Departments of Sport And Recreas as well as Home Affairs tighten up their policy in hiring foreign coaches. Our Clubs and National Team have been subject of hiring mediocore forign coaches and pay the senior executives salaries. Process of acquiring work permit for mediocores in our football should more tighter.
Our country look upon these 2 departments herein above to assist in taking out embarassments in our local football.
