Leeds' David Somma likely to play for Bafana

Posted: 2 November 2010 Time: 19:32

Coach Pitso Mosimane says he is considering Leeds United striker Davide Somma for a Bafana Bafana debut in the Nelson Mandela Challenge against USA in Cape Town on November 17.

Somma has been in top form in front of goal in the English Championship, forcing Mosimane to consider him for the game against the USA.

Mosimane travelled to Europe recently to watch some Bafana players in action with their respective clubs, but did not travel to England as Somma was not in action for Leeds the past weekend.

However, despite failing to see the Johannesburg-born striker in action, Mosimane confirmed that he is seriously considering calling him up for the Nelson Mandela Challenge.

“The main purpose of the trip was to go and watch as many players as possible, including Somma, but I heard that he won’t be playing this past weekend so I ended up not going to England," he says.

“This is one of the many visits we will be making to watch our players abroad. This time I had a punishing schedule and only ended up watching two matches.

“I would have loved to stay and watch more players, but I had to come back to prepare for the Mandela Challenge in two weeks' time. Having not seen Somma in action does not mean he is out of contention for the friendly in Cape Town; I might bring him down to have a closer look at him, but that is something I am still discussing with my technical team.

"Time and schedule permitting, I will go back and watch more players because it’s important to visit these players abroad and not just wait for them to come to Bafana Bafana."

Mosimane paid a visit to Belgium where he watched Siboniso Gaxa, Daylon Claasen and Lance Davids in action for Lierse FC last Saturday. The following day ‘Jingles’ was on hand to see Anele Ngcongca’s Racing Genk lose 2-1 at home to Anderlecht.

“I was impressed to see that all the guys played; not only that, but also the fact that they played 90 minutes each. It is encouraging to see our players taking the field regularly as it keeps them in tip top condition when they come to the national team.

“In the case of Ngcongca, he is playing for a big team, and I was able to speak to some people from his club and they are impressed with him. They want to keep him longer, and that is great news,” Mosimane says.

The squad to face the USA will be announced next week Wednesday, November 10.

aah, cool...an open minded approach is appreciated. I'd be happy if Andile jali would also get some game time...i mean, Sibaya and Mokoena have played almost 200 games amongst themselves...would it be a crime just to let them sit this one out and bring in a Bevan Fransman for instance- just to check out the depth

i c some of u guys r selfcentred about bafana selection but in case of Ngcobo i don't wanna c him play 4 bafana,i've been asking this question 4 da while now as to why ngcobo is in bafana squad but i think pitso will answer this question one day as he is da coach, perhaps he sees something that we don't see in that player.MY BLOOD IS YELLOW.

i really can't see myself supporting this team when players are not picked on fairness. look at what is happening at the springbok, patrick lambie, mvovo and jacobs among other were selected to play for the bokke based on their performance in the currie cup. i don't know why we stil persist wit players such as sangweni who is reaching his expiring date in jus a matter of 2-3 yrs. no player above the age of 25 (wit exception of special talents) should be allowed to make a bafana debut at that age. guys like xulu, ntshumayelo, s. khumalo all deserve to a place in bafana. sibaya has played his part, however it's about time that we let go of him. pitso is short cited, we should be building towards 2014 cause that's more important than 2012. qualifying for 2012 and not for 2014 would be a bitter pill for all of us to swallow. we need a team wit an average age of 26 by then we would have played together for 3 yrs minimum. not these grandpa teko, sibaya, aaron, ngcobo etc etc.

Knowledge is power. somma did express his desire to play for bafana. unless you expected an sms from him telling you that, don't expose your lack of knowledge again like that in public.

All we ask for is for you coach to give him a chance to prove himself, if you can do it with Ngcobo (a striker thats not scoring), how difficult can it be with a guy who bangs them in on a regular basis?

Why doesn't this fcuk jus watch these guys on tape instead of wasting cash like that as if safa doesn't have financial problems. just because he preceded carlos it doesn't mean that he should be getting the same treatment since fifa was paying carlos salary. when players know that he's in the stadium watching them he might get a very distorted image on their performance. PLEASE GIVE YOUNG PLAYERS A CHANCE- THEY DESERVE IT.
It's sad to note that the league will go into yet another break, it's tko this weekend then nothing else till bafana has played their game. HONESTLY THIS IS BULLSHIT. How else do we expect teams to give us a consistent performance on the pitch wit so many breaks. never mind that the xmas break is also approaching. don't forget that a lot of games will be rained out jus before then.

That has been my argument for a very long time, especially wrt Sangweni. at 29, he has nothing more to offer Bafanax2, we need young players like Xulu,Ntshumayelo,Jali,Serero,Patty and Erasmus to take this team to the future.

I agree 120% with your last paragraph, i can't for the life of me understand why we don't have a full fixture list this Wednesday, its just madness. the PSL is really the reason for empty stands in the stadiums, they must not blame supporters, how long should we keep up with this stop start stop start? doeas it make sense that the teams that did not participate in the MTN8 have only played 7 games this season, including telkom?

The PSL lacks professionalism and foresight, period!

South African soccer is full of supporters who, most of them are mere fans with vuvuzelas, lets give Pitso a chance to do what he's hired for, why tell him who to select? Orlando Pierates fans in particular are calling for Jali's selection in the starting-eleven, that midget isn't a national team material, if you've read Khune's interview last week on Soccer Laduma, he made it clear that both standards, PSL and National team vary a lot. Hitherto, Jali remains a PSL material, the same applies with Pattison.

Here are Jali's weaknesses for being considered as a national team material:
1. He's a midget (usually at the international level, you need taller players, balls will float over him)
2. He hasn't proved himself yet in terms of replacing McBeth Sibaya who is plying his trade at the highest league
3. Within a foreseable future, SA will not revert to its known football status, the reasons among others being, age-cheating and lack of professionalism in our players. Until suh time that the big teams have more than 4 players as regulars in the national team, we won't rule African and be competitive in global soccer. For example, Spain had more Barcelona players and fewer Real Madrid and taking Egypt, it has more players of one of its biggest team.

However, the same cannot be said about SA teams. There is a brouhaha that Motsepe is growing our soccer while he's killing it, injecting more financial resources in soccer is more ideal than injecting more money into 'useless' players' banks account

pitso u might as well Lebogang kukuma/ he plays in the Free sate and he is doing well banging goals

you can travel to the Free state using the Gravy Train= less cost effective and he will at least be in action when you go there
how can Pitso consider a player that does not even know who is the coach of Bafana bafana?

mr editor here something to talk about

how is the young Liti from totten.Spurs Gareth bale

i urge all the left attacking players to look at that boy, he made everyone that is deemed the best in the world to look ordinary

i mean Maicon was buttered, Lucio was smashed
