Eguavoen lashes media over Eagles neglect

Posted: 2010-09-01 08:09

Super Eagles stand-in coach Austin Eguavoen on Tuesday pointed to media neglect as one reason for the 'low performance' of players from the domestic league.

Eguavoen accused the media of failing to report on the activities of players from the domestic league, even when they are in the national camp.

"You people are the ones contributing to the low performance of our home based players while in the national camp," the former international said in a rare fit of pique.

"All through the period we were camped here in preparation for our trip to Korea, no single journalist visited us.

"Now that the foreign based players are around, the camp has become a beehive of activities."

Former coach Shuaibu Amodu had pointed out during his time that local players lacked confidence, and Eguavoen admitted that more media coverage would build the players' self esteem.

"If we want the home based players to do well, we should encourage them. They also need to read about themselves in the media, this will encourage them to aspire to do more for themselves and the country," he said.

All the invited domestic league players are in camp, except for Warri Wolves forward Fengor Ogude, who has just signed for Norwegian club Valerenga.

Of the foreign contingent, Obafemi Martins, Oluwafemi Ajilore, Chidi Odiah, Dele Aiyenugba, Vincent Enyeama, Michael Eneramo, Dickson Etuhu and Kalu Uche all trained along with the local players led by goalkeeper Bassey Akpan.

Joseph Yobo is expected in midweek on completion of his loan move from Everton to Fenerbahce.

@The Word,
Keita is still our best defensive midfielder at the moment, I still like him because he always play out his heart when ever he is called up, you don`t crucify him because he got a red card in the world. Is he the only player that got red card in the world cup?

We shall see what your local players will do. People forget that any good local player will become a foreign player within months of showing his worth to the world. One of your so called local boys is no more local now a foreign player playing in Norway.

I am not for this stupid home base rule. If you are a Nigerian and you are good, you should be invited whether home or abroad. No quota to any local player because they will only use the SE to gain transfer to one rubbish club in Afghanistan. Only invite a local player that can displace or fight for a place with his foreign counterpart. Why is Peter Utaka not invited? He is still scoring week in week out, Why is Victor Obinna left out? Why is Obiora Nwannkwo left out? Even Sani Kaita I used to hate is a better player that I ever imagined. Forget his 2 secs madness in South Africa, the guy works hard. Where is Taye Taiwo, he scored just last week. I still believe Yak is a best Striker for a long time but I will not advise bringing Yak, Kanu, Afolabi and J. Utaka back into the team, but I'll call people like Anichebe, Victor Moses, Olubayo Adefemi, Adeleye back into the team. Madagascar is no team wait till we met Angola, Benin and we play the home based players then you will know they are terrible players. Players that failed against ordinary Niger. I rest my case.

@teeboy i love you post, one of the best in recent times

Why would they report on them when our league is more or less a "Sunday-Sunday" eyesor. Until we learn to make our league attractive to watch, nobody will give a hoot about these domestic players. I for one can't waste my precious time watching this players
