Ajax lused Cape Town Stadium

Posted: 30 June 2010 Time: 16:44

Kaizer Chiefs will be moving base to use Rand Stadium as their home ground for the 2010/11 season, with the venue troubles that haunted the Premiership last season due to the run-up to the World Cup a distant memory.

Last term’s compressed season was also rocked by stadium unavailability due to upgrades and renovations, but now clubs are spoilt for choice as they seek to find permanent home that they can be identified with.

While Chiefs will be returning to the Rand Stadium – used by relegated Jomo Cosmos last season and that that Amakhosi have previously used – archrivals Orlando Pirates will be staying put at Orlando Stadium.

Last season Chiefs started out at Orlando Stadium, but then dumped the Soweto venue that they shared with Pirates to use Loftus Versfeld after losing four of their first five home matches. Chiefs also played two of their home at Super Stadium and Moses Mabhida last season.

While AmaKhosi will return much closer to their Naturena base south of Johannesburg, rivals Mamelodi Sundowns will also be heading back to their traditional home HM Pitje Stadium in the township of Mamelodi East.

Sundowns have had to share Super Stadium with SuperSport United over the past few years, and also occasionally used Loftus Versfeld as home.

According to the Absa Premiership draft fixtures that is in possession of, Ajax will be using the new Cape Town Stadium as their home, switching from Athlone, which will only be used by Santos.

Ajax will kick-off the season on August 27 against Bloemfontein Celtic at Cape Town Stadium. PSL newboys Vasco da Gama will be forced to dump Parow Park and use the Bellville Stadium as their new base.

AmaZulu will adopt Moses Mabhida as their new home, while Golden Arrows’ home games have been provisionally set for Chatsworth.

Platinum Stars will stay put in the North West using the Royal Bafokeng, as will Maritzburg United (Harry Gwala), SuperSport United (Super Stadium), Free State Stars (Charles Mopeli), Moroka Swallows (Dobsonville), Black Aces (Puma Rugby Stadium) and Bloemfontein Celtic (Seisa Ramobodu).

The biggest match on the PSL calendar – the Soweto Derby – has been scheduled for November, with Pirates at home, while the Nedbank Cup final will be played on May 28 next year, a week after the League matches end.

The Telkom Knockout final is scheduled for December, while the MTN8 will be played on October 2.

According to the letter from PSL CEO Kjetil Siem, all clubs are invited to submit their input about the draft fixtures list by Friday July 2.

Hloni: I think it's important for a team to play close to a capacity crowd each time they play at home. I wouldn't expect any team to adopt SC & then again the only team that can consider this & it won't be goodenough still is Chiefs. I'm waiting for the Chiefs stadium to be finalised & PieRats administration have made a great call by going to elokishini.
