NFD streams to merge

First Division streams to merge

Posted: 9 May 2010 Time: 10:18 am

The National First Division's Inland and Coastal Streams will merge into one stream from the 2011/12 Season.

This decision was taken at the National Soccer League's Board of Governors meeting held in Sandton on Saturday.

According to a report the PSL's website, other decisions affecting the NFD from the 2011-2012 season include:

• NFD teams to field five South African born under 23 players at all times during NFD matches. • NFD teams allowed a maximum of three foreign players only

Regarding the relegation and promotion of teams from PSL to NFD and vice versa, the winner of the NFD from 2011/12 season will gain automatic promotion to the PSL.

The team that finishes 16th in Absa Premiership will face automatic relegation.

The team that finishes 15th in the Absa Premiership along with the teams that finish 2nd and 3rd in the NFD will play in a round robin format to determine who gets to play in the PSL.

It was also decided that the NFD Inland and Coastal streams for the 2010/2011 season will be finalized and confirmed at the next Executive Committee meeting later this month.

I have mixed feelings about this, especially this issue of fielding five u/23 players at all times. Age cheats are coming; where are the 16 teams supposed to get talented, disciplined u/23 who have completed matric. Last I checked, 18 year olds are serious smokers and drinkers and they hate school and sports.

Now dat makes some sense. Maybe teams like Cosmos will start taking their games seriously.

fully agree with you.we must have 20 teams in PSL and in the second division as well.our second division must be one league.in this case teams will be forced to search for talent and keep it rather than relying on the money and buying ready made.I WONDER IF DR,COLONEL,CHAIRMAN,10%,SONONO WILL AGREE BECAUSE SA FOOTBALL BELONGS TO HIM.

Can now the greedy lot or owners of Fotball increase the NFD grant-as this is the only way teams are gonna fight it out for young talent.Remember "Development" that the football fat cats sing about in all media. Now put " the money" (cos its not urs) ur mouth is.

This is the same crap – what do the play offs again… there’s no different from the past two streams as loser from PSL (15TH) is going to face yet three teams from NFD.

That is not enough. The teams finishing 15th and 16th in the PSL should get automatic drop, those who finish 13th and 14th should contest in the play-offs.

For Promotions in the NFD, teams finishing 1st and 2nd should get an automatic promotion, those finishing 3rd and 4th should contest in the promotion play offs.

The issue of 5 SA born under 23's should be in the PSL and The NFD should have 5 under 20's.

My plea to SAFA can u please guys take our football SERIOUSLY and REPLAN OUR LEAGUE , so that we can see PSL going back to its glory days like in 1995/6 era. 16 teams have limited the selection of players for Bafana, things were better when we had a big pool of 18 teams, we can even make it 20 teams by nationalizing the PSL to all 9 provinces. Soccer attracts more crowds than rugby i.e. big derbies, cup finals. Currie Cup match between Boland and Pumas doesn’t make 2000 fans, same can be said between WP and Boland which is usually a lull of 7000 fans screaming in empty Newlands.

SOCCER IS WORLD'S NUMBER ONE SPORT SAFA AND SPORTS MINISTER MUST KNOW THIS. We can't continue being second class to rugby.

MY PROPOSAL PSL AFTER 2010 WC

PSL after 2010 can be designed in a way that every province has a team and of course preserving the existing big teams. PSL should be a provincial league with no relegation but sacking of coaches and players to Mvela, big sponsors can come in big numbers in our soccer as there would be no risk of sponsors losing out once their team is sacked to first division. Plus PSL can introduce television and marketing rights (to international channels)where PSL can be viewed all over Africa and Europe,Asia. This can bring people to stadiums and attract a lot of MONEY.

PSL DESIGN STAGES OF OUR SOCCER:Should involve the ff.

*PSL(finished product)
*NFD/Mvela(u 21 & u23 development phase)
*Vodacom league( u17 -u20 development phase)
*High school(u 15-u19 development phase)
*Primary schools(u 12-u14 development phase)

Soccer Stadiums usage: (All these owned by SAFA and partially municipalities). Players playing here should be fully developed professionals.

MVELA LEAGUE(1st Division)
Aim here:To develop players for PSL.

Mvela league can be designed to be a 16 team development(preparatory)league where players are 80% under 21 and 20% over age players. This league can act as a FEEDER league to PSL teams and under 23s. Teams in PSL can be allowed to work in partnership with NFD teams like Sundowns & Tawana do.

Vodacom league (2nd Division)
Aim here:To develop players for NFD/Mvela.

Can be designed to be feeder league to Mvela. Teams playing here should from lower ranks made of high school kids and few experienced players. Schools regional leagues should feed this league.

Note:Small stadiums used.
