Kayode Irekperu, Zamfara United

Posted: 16 March 2010 Time: 14:35

Barely 24 hours after Endurance Idahor and Alili Galadima were buried in Benin and Kano respectively, Zamfara United player Kayode Irekperu died on Sunday night in Gusau.

Irekperu, 23, died in his sleep at his club's camp while some of his team mates were away to Port Harcourt for a League fixture.

Zamfara United General Manager Shehu Gusau told KickOffNigeria.com that the player had visited the Federal Medical Centre earlier in the day where he was treated for malaria but died soon after "He came back from church on Sunday morning and complained that he was not feeling well.

"Our team doctor had travelled to Port Harcourt with the rest of the team, so he went to the Federal Medical Centre, where he was seen and given a prescription for malaria.

"He came back, took his medication and lay down, but never woke up," Gusua said. "I had never even met him before as he has not played any game for us."

Irekperu, according to Gusau is half brother to former Super Eagles goalkeeper Ike Shorunmu .

"I didn’t even know until Ike called me as they were making arrangements for his burial."

Irekperu was taken to Lagos on Monday morning and buried later that day according to Islamic rites.

It is well. We commiserate with the family of this 23 year old footballer. May he rest well. Meanwhile, we ask God to forgive those who are interested in whether the boy was good or bad. Whatsoever their intentions.

But seriously, Nigeria is going thru a truly bad weather...we need divine help, with all these deaths and failings.

A sad one indeed. may God give his gentle soul peace and the family rest of mind as they mourn their own. There is need for prayers in this country and the footballers.

@ Emeka, pray nothing of this nature befall your family, cos you dont have any respect for the dead..

@ Macky, it was only Emeka that typed his post, why are you then insulting his family and the entire family members??? y not insult and cause Emeka alone.....Manners is just one thing we are lacking in this forum.. please am not insulting you but its just an advice.

Once again, may the dead rest in perfect peace.
