It has been claimed that Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has contacted Mason Greenwood after the criminal charges against the striker were dropped; what he told the forward has now reportedly been revealed.

The footballer, who has not set foot on a football pitch since he was arrested in January 2022, saw the charges of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm against him dropped earlier this month.

After the Englishman's case had reached its conclusion, the Manchester club said in a statement that it will "conduct its own process before determining next steps" with the player.

Since that announcement from the club, reports have suggested that the United hierarchy is split regarding Greenwood's future with them, with some believing he should return to the first team while others disagree.

While it remains to be seen what decision the Red Devils will take on the forward, Ten Hag is now said to have made contact with the 21-year-old, according to The Sun.

“Mason has spent a long time with very little – if any – contact from the club," a source is said to have told the British publication.

"As and when they were in touch, it was never direct and always through a third party.

"So for the manager to call him was a big step for him and one he really appreciated.

"The manager enquired how he was feeling physically and mentally, and said he was pleased the charges had been dropped.

"He thought it was the right thing to do to get in touch with Mason.

"But he was clear it will be the club rather than him which will decide if Mason can play for United again."
