Lionel Messi has now splashed £175 000 (R3.8 million) on golden gifts for his Argentina teammates following their 2022 FIFA World Cup success in December.

The 35-year-old led the Albiceleste to their third World Cup title, and their first since 1986 under the captaincy of iconic footballer Diego Maradona.

The Paris Saint-Germain star has since been widely hailed as the greatest player of his generation, with many also claiming he is the best of all time.

Upon Argentina's return to Buenos Aires after their triumph in Qatar, they were met with joyous celebrations as millions took to the streets to witness the team's trophy parade.

Messi has since stated that winning the tournament was the proudest moment of his career, while many of his compatriots have praised him for how instrumental he was in making the country world champions once again.

With the triumph still fresh in his mind, the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner recently purchased 35 24-carat gold iPhones for the Argentina players and staff through a company called iDesign Gold, according to The Sun.

Each device has the player's name, shirt number, and the Argentine crest engraved on it.

A source told the abovementioned publication: "Lionel wanted to do something special and blingy to celebrate his proudest moment.

"He got in touch with entrepreneur Ben Lyons and they came up with the design together."

It is understood that the golden iPhones were delivered to the FC Barcelona legend's apartment in Paris on Saturday, and are yet to be handed out to the recipients.

iDesign Gold CEO Lyons said: "Lionel is not only the Goat but he's one of IDesign Gold's most loyal customers and got in touch with us a couple of months after the World Cup final.

"He said he wanted a special gift for all the players and staff to celebrate the amazing win but didn't want the usual gift of watches.

"So, I suggested gold iPhones inscribed with their names and he loved the idea."
