Head coach Cavin Johnson has issued a plea for more patience with Kaizer Chiefs' rising star Mfundo Vilakazi.

Mfundo Vilakazi, having made his third senior appearance for Kaizer Chiefs fresh off signing a long-term contract.

Chiefs announced mid-week that the 18-year-old had penned his first senior contract with the club that ties how to Kaizer Chiefs Village until 2028.

It was unsurprising then when Vilakazi came on as a second-half substitute last Saturday, although the teenager was unable to help his side avoid a 1-0 defeat to Richards Bay.

Speaking to media after the match, Johnson called for more patience over the youngster.

"I think he (Vilakazi) did a lot. I think he made the fans happy. But at the same time, I did see him go forward, which he was supposed to do, and he's capable of doing that," Johnson said.

"We need to give him a little bit more time to settle in on the field with Kaizer Chiefs. I mean outside is fine, but he needs to settle in on the field for Kaizer Chiefs.

"And I thought in a lot of moments you saw him, he was happy. I thought he might be sad now because we lose and it's his first game.

"But I'm sure he’ll come to the party a lot better as the season goes on and as he spends more and more time with the Kaizer Chiefs first team."
