Johnson's 'demons' at Chiefs

Cavin Johnson's run in his caretaker role as head coach at Kaizer Chiefs is threatening to turn into a familiar tale with the visit of in-form Stellenbosch FC on Tuesday night.

Stellies arrive at FNB Stadium (19h30) on an incredible run of 18 games unbeaten, with Mamelodi Sundowns the last team to defeat them back in September 2023.

For Johnson, he has the task of avoiding failure to win after having won only once in the last seven games.

One win in seven matches is below par and reason to worry, especially at Chiefs where the demands are bigger, so Johnson needs to provide the inspiration for this group of Amakhosi charges.

His predecessor, Molefi Ntseki, was fired after winning one in his last seven after just 13 games in charge.

Johnson has also now overseen seven games, but considering that the season is heading for the home stretch, and he is only temporarily in charge, he won't face the sack.

However, what is of concern is that the 65-year-old has sunk himself in a worse footing in his reign in charge.

From having had the best winning percentage of all coaches that have been at the club since the last trophy success, Johnson is now sinking closer to Giovanni Solinas.

Johnson had a 66,6 % winning mark at Christmas but has now dropped to 38,5 % having won just once since then.

At the rate at which he has dropped his winning percentage, he could sink below Solinas into the bottom three but has the benefit of still having another nine games to improve his mark under the wins column.

Winning percentage mark of Chiefs since their last trophy:

Ernst Middendorp – 29 wins, 16 defeats, 15 draws – 48,3%

Arthur Zwane – 16 wins, 13 defeats, 8 draws – 43,2%

Steve Komphela – 46 wins, 40 draws, 26 draws – 41%

Stuart Baxter – 11 wins, 10 defeats, 6 draws – 40,7%

Giovanni Solinas – 7 wins, 6 defeats, 7 draws – 35%
