Mamelodi Sundowns have provided a key update on the health of attacking midfielder Themba Zwane following a worrisome injury during their MTN8 semi-final clash against Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday.

Zwane suffered what looked to be a gruesome injury when he collided with Chiefs' Yusuf Maart and was to be stretchered off in the first half of a tightly contested 1-1 draw against Amakhosi.

The club has confirmed that, as of Monday morning, Zwane has returned home from hospital and is recovering.

"In Saturday's MTN8 semi-final first leg Themba 'Mshishi' Zwane sustained a deep cut to his upper right eye. He received immediate medical attention on-field and was stabilised at the stadium," the club said in a statement.

"Zwane was later sent to hospital for further observation and a precautionary scan in terms of concussion protocols.

"The good news is that he is well and resting at home under the supervision of the club’s medical department."

Shortly after the match, head coach Rulani Mokwena also expressed concern over Zwane, but was grateful for the FIFA break.

"With that deep cut that has him hospitalised, the foul went against us and (that) is probably my biggest thing, but we have a FIFA break now," Mokwena said.

"We also want Bafana to do well and they need Mshishi, but fortunately it’s a friendly and although they are important, the health and safety of a player Mshishi is probably more important at this stage than a performance against Congo and Namibia.

"So hopefully he’s able to get some rest because clearly with a concussion, it’s for the next 10 to 14 days and it’s a little bit of a precautionary measure to get some rest, especially in the space that we find ourselves in with our lack of offensive options."

Bafana Bafana host Namibia on Saturday, 9 September while Sundowns will return to action on Friday, 15 September with a clash against Bumamuru in the CAF Champions League second preliminary round.
