Sukazi: The country benefitted from Ramovic, Rulani rivalry

TS Galaxy chairman Tim Sukazi has suggested that the legacy of Sead Ramovic and Rulani Mokwena rivalry will still continue when the Mpumalanga-based outfit clash against Mamelodi Sundowns.

With the league title race having been a foregone conclusion for the past few seasons, with Sundowns becoming runaway leaders from the early stages and Kaizer Chiefs not competing for trophies and therefore affecting the attraction the Soweto Derby has traditionally commanded, there were suggestions that the public fights between Ramovic and Mokwena created a new rivalry.

This often led to the opposite benches taking the attention, leading up to and after matches between Galaxy and Sundowns.

Sukazi, who was a big part of the saga, as his club pressed legal charges against The Brazilians and Mokwena, has explained what started the feud between the two coaches and revealed that he misses that kind of 'flavour' which created an alternative for the Soweto Derby.

"I won't say [Ramovic is] volatile. I think it's the flavour the game missed or is missing right now, that has created some sort of good rivalry, a competition to the Soweto Derby, between Sundowns and TS Galaxy. It has now become a match to watch for all concerned," Sukazi said in an interview on Sunday World News YouTube Channel.

"We needed that, we needed to have an alternative. I think we have benefitted in the country. What sparked up the whole thing, obviously, was issues as they were raised by Mokwena, which were untruthful. We as a club we also came forward, we will always defend our coach. We wouldn't allow anyone to blemish our name, we work hard. We could not allow someone to make accusations which are unfounded.

"That's what triggered the whole thing. You may recall, coach Rulani mentioned that he lost to us in the Carling Cup because Ronwen [Williams], [Teboho] Mokoena, [Khuliso] Mudau, [Themba] Zwane and all these players were not there, that's why they lost, which was not the truth. Remember, we beat them at Loftus with all of them in the starting XI. Sead could not take that.

"We want credit given to our players and coaching team. That's what started the whole thing. It created this flavour, which we are now missing, but the rivalry stands. The match between TS Galaxy and Sundowns played on 21 May 2024 stood to be the best match of the season, to be honest," the Rockets boss added.

Galaxy have progressed to the Carling Knockout quarter-finals and will face Magesi FC, after edging Chippa United 1-0 in extra-time in the round of 16.
