Bafana striker continues meteoric rise in America

Bafana Bafana striker Bongokuhle Hlongwane scored the match-winner as his side defeated Houston Dynamo in an MLS clash on Wednesday night.

The 22-year-old needed just 13 minutes to break the deadlock for the Loons, pouncing on a loose ball after a poor clearance from Dynamo's Micael to finish from inside the box. The goal would eventually decide the match and Hlongwane was awarded the Man of the Match award for his efforts.

The strike was Hlongwane's fifth goal in 12 appearances across all competitions and a third in his last three after netting a brace for United in a Round of 32 clash against Philadelphia a week prior.

The win propels United up to seventh on the league table in the Western Conference, just four points behind Njabulo Blom's St. Louis City, who sit fourth on the table.

Hlongwane's form will not go unnoticed by Bafana head Hugo Broos, who is expected to name his squad set to take on Morocco in an African Cup of Nations qualifier to be played in June.

Meanwhile, the former Maritzburg United man will return to action on Sunday when Minnesota take on sixth-placed Portland away.

Kick-off is at 4:30 (South African time).
