SAFA: Impossible to have VAR in the league next season

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) may be used in cup games next season but not in the Betway Premiership matches, according to the head of the refereeing department at SAFA, Mr. Abdul Ebrahim.

Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie has stated that the time for VAR in South African football has arrived, as his department is prepared to financially support the project.

Ebrahim indicated that there is a strong possibility of VAR being implemented in the PSL next season, but with limitations.

"The VAR was not tested in any South African matches; at the moment, it remains exactly where it was—nothing has moved," Ebrahim tells KickOff.

"The government has promised assistance, but we haven't heard anything from them, so everyone is still waiting for Minister McKenzie and his department.

"As far as refereeing is concerned, we are ready, but beyond that, there is nothing more we can add.

"The tender process has been completed, and the tender committee needs to be established to make a decision. They need to go through the tender process, and obviously, they will select a service provider from there.

"It's possible for the PSL to have VAR next season, but only in certain matches; we will not be able to implement VAR in the league because a lot of training is still needed.

"There is possibility in cup games, yes, but not for the league."

Ebrahim also praised his refereeing panel for their performance over the past season, although he admitted there is always room for improvement.

"Though the season is not over yet, as we still have the promotional/relegation play-offs to conduct, we are happy with the effort. Complaints will be the norm, but people must be realistic in their expectations.

"It is common in our football that at the end of the season, people reflect and often return to critiquing referees, unfortunately.

"Overall, we had a good season; everyone makes mistakes at the end of the day."
