Pirates hint at Maela successor for captaincy

Orlando Pirates are counting down just over a week before the 'big reveal' on who will be the new captain ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Teenager Mbekezeli Mbokazi is making headlines for potentially being made captain under new head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou.

One of the big talking points during The Buccaneers' pre-season matches was Mbokazi being handed the armband, initially in the second half against Cypriot side Pafos FC, after Nkosinathi Sibisi, who was the skipper that started was substituted.

The 19-year-old also captained the Soweto giants against Granada, ahead of the likes of Tapelo Xoki, who was one of the captains in the absence of Innocent Maela.

The departure of Maela during the off-season, coupled with a new coach at the helm, has given place to a new official captain potentially being named.

Pirates media officer kept the cards close to her chest on the matter but suggested there will be a 'big reveal' when Ezimnyama host Polokwane City in the MTN8 quarter-finals next Saturday.

"Let's keep that one as a surprise, our first match of the season is on the second of August when we're defending our trophy at Orlando Stadium," Merafe said at 5FM studios during the parade of the new jersey.

"So ja there's gonna be a big reveal, look out for the armband.

"I can give you a hint, there's a 50 percent chance that he is in this line-up," Merafe hinted.

The line-up of players in studio were Tshegogatso Mabasa, Sibisi, Makhehlene Makhaula and Olisa Ndah.

After the 1-1 draw against Pafos, Ouaddou explained his decision to give Mbokazi the armband.

"We want to give him more time because he will be one of the main men for us this season.

"He's South African, he's proud of what he's doing and we're proud of him," the Moroccan coach added.
