The Citizens last week announced a partnership with sports betting platform SportPesa, with the company's logo to be emblazoned on the chest of their strip.
The club went on to don kits with the sponsor's logo for their MTN8 quarter-final tie against Polokwane City but as reported by TimesLIVE had neither sought nor received permission to use the branding.
According to the rules of the league, teams may not wear the advertising of their sponsor without prior written permission of the league 'which will not be unreasonably withheld'.
It further states that 'the sponsor must not be in conflict with the sponsor of the league or any other official suppliers of the league'.
The PSL is alleging City were informed that they had not sought permission but went ahead anyway, almost prompting the league to call off the match.
The Citizens subsequently beat Polokwane 1-0 to progress to the semi-finals where they’ll meet league champions Bidvest Wits.
Comitis was quick to point out that “he’s done his homework” and cannot see what all the fuss is about.
“Unfortunately the league’s opinion differs,” Comitis told snl24.com/kickoff. “I have not transgressed any rules or regulations of the league.
“I thought it was dealt with the board of governors. This is just unfortunate as there seems to be a difference of opinion.”
SportPesa is a global betting company which also sponsors overseas teams like English Premier League outfit Everton as well Championship side Hull City.
They’ve also expanded their footprint on the African continent pairing with teams like Nairobi’s Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards as well as Young Africans and Simba FC from Tanzania.
Comitis acknowledges he’s prepared to meet with the PSL to resolve the matter speedily.
“Football has taught me not to be emotional about things, you know. I’m sure this matter can be resolved amicably,” the former Ajax Cape Town boss further stated.
Meanwhile Comitis expressed his satisfaction after City’s first victory of the season, especially considering the exciting football the Citizens dished up.
“We don’t just want to win, we want to win in style,” said Comitis. “Benni has enhanced this with a more attacking brand of football. With guys like [Aubrey] Ngoma and [Judas] Moseamedi on the comeback trail it should just add to our attacking prowess."
