Former Chiefs coach: Player power got me fired

In the latest edition of Negotiating Behind the Scenes, KickOff catches up with a former Kaizer Chiefs coach who reveals what was said during the interview when he joined as a head coach.

Sergio dos Santos played for Amakhosi as a midfielder before he became their coach early in the nineties.

Santos says fans and player power are what caused him to vacate the club's hot seat.

Who I signed for?

"Kaizer Chiefs, I signed as a coach. It was 1993. I was very excited, but also worried because at that stage I was very young.

"I had just promoted Cape Town Spurs to the premier league and finished in the top eight for two seasons that I coached them there.

"At Chiefs, I was replacing Jeff Buttler who was very successful the season before, he had left Chiefs for Mamelodi Sundowns. I was 44 years old.

"Kaizer Motaung said to me we need to rebuild the squad as it was getting old, we need new players.

"I gave him three names, Shoes Moshoeu, Steve Komphela and Benjamin Reed. And he got me all three."

How did you find out?

"Kaizer Motaung phoned me after learning from a newspaper that my boss at Cape Town Spurs was being unfair to me. He told me Buttler was going to Sundowns."

Where did you meet?

"I flew up to Johannesburg to meet with Kaizer."

Who was there?

"China Ngema...All the directors I think were there. They said because of my background of having an understanding of the culture of Chiefs, they felt I could take the club and move it forward."

What surprised you?

"Nothing surprised me, it was a very easy conversation, also it was the first time that Chiefs were going to the CAF Champions Cup."

Did you get what you wanted?

"No, because after four months I had to leave the club because one or two supporters were not happy about it. And at that stage, we were lying number four in the league.

"And we had got to the Quarterfinals of the CAF Champions Cup, beating Gunners, Kiyovu Sport, we got through to the Quarterfinals to face Zamalek, but I was fired before that.

"Certainly Chiefs supporters fired me because I was called into the office and was told, look we can't guarantee your security.

"We played Moroka Swallows at Rand Stadium, we were leading 1-0, and we lost 2-1. And after the game supporters were very upset and they kept on threatening me.

"I had to be escorted out of the ground to the opposite side of the field where Teenage Dladla who was one of my assistants found me and took me back to the hotel.

"I had signed a two-year contract with a one-year option. I got paid a settlement."

What you would change?

"The toughest problem that I had at Chiefs was that, during pre-season eight of my players were with the Bafana Bafana squad.

"When we played the Iwisa Maize Meal Spectacular they all came back. If that happens you have to make changes to the team that you were working on during the pre-season because you can't leave out people like Doctor Khumalo and Neil Tovey who was the captain.

"But then, once you drop the other players you start another problem. There were possibly one or two senior players who were not part of the Bafana squad who didn't like the idea of me dropping them."
