Morocco boss Herve Renard calls it quits after Africa Cup of Nations

Herve Renard has confirmed his decision to step down as coach of Morocco after the Atlas Lions' underwhelming Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Egypt.

Morocco were billed among the favourites to clinch the tournament after finishing top of their group with a flawless record, but were sent packing in the last 16 when they suffered a shock defeat to Benin on penalties.

Speculation regarding Renard's future has been rife, following the loss, and the tactician took to his official Twitter account on Sunday to confirm his resignation from the Atlas Lions.

"Morocco will always remain, for me, a country with which I lived incredible emotions," Renard wrote in a statement on Twitter.

"I am proud of what we have achieved and how far we have managed to come.

"It is time for me to close this long and beautiful chapter of my life, not without emotion and sadness, but it is an inevitable decision taken well before Afcon 2019."

The Frenchman becomes the seventh coach to leave his post after the tournament in Egypt, following in the footsteps of Emmanuel Amunike, Clarence Seedorf, Javier Aguirre, Sebastien Desabre, Ricardo Mannetti and Paul Put.
