Manchester United, who were down to ten men, booked their spot in the FA Cup fourth-round after defeating Arsenal on penalties.
United handed starts to goalkeeper Altay Bayindir and Alejandro Garnacho following the draw with Liverpool, while Mikel Merino and Jorginho joined Martin Odegaard in the midfield for the Gunners.
The home side through they had the opening goal after 17 minutes when Gabriel Martinelli fired home in a one-on-one situation, however the joy was short-lived as the Brazilian was deemed to have been offside.
Mikel Arteta's charges dominated proceedings throughout the first half against a Red Devils outfit, who sat back and defended quite well while hoping to catch their opponents on the break.
Arteta, however, had to re-shuffle the pack just before the halftime break as Raheem Sterling was brought on to replace Gabriel Jesus, who was stretchered off after colliding with Bruno Fernandes.
The deadlock was broken five minutes into the second half when Fernandes finished off an impressive counter-attack with a lovely first-time finish from the edge of the box.
However, United's joy was short-lived as they were forced to finish the game with ten men after Diogo Dalot was sent off in the 61st minute for picking up his second yellow card on the night.
Arsenal were back on level terms two minutes later as defender Gabriel Magalhaes pounced on a clearance and volleyed home at the near post.
It could have got even better for the home side with 20 minutes after being awarded a penalty for Harry Maguire's foul on Kai Havertz. Martin Odegaard took responsibility but was unable to convert as his effort was saved.
There would be no goal after that despite the Gunners throwing everything forward, with Havertz guilty of missing a big chance as the third round tie was forced into extra-time and ultimately a penalty shoot-out.
The Red Devils showed their class by netting all five spot-kicks while Havertz saw his penalty saved by Bayindir.
