Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has hit out at Cristiano Ronaldo following his comments about the Red Devils’ recent struggles.

United are going through a difficult patch, where some of their stars including Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Harry Maguire among others, have been accused of not carrying their weight by former players and pundits.

This week, Ronaldo also questioned the desire of some of his fellow teammates and accused the team of not having the right mentality to be a top-three side.

Now, ex-United forward Rooney believes that Ronaldo is setting the bar too low, as he feels that his former club should be challenging at the very top, per Daily Mail.

"Manchester United have to be a top-one team, not top-three," Rooney said in Derby County press conference.

"That's the demands which the fans put on you, the demands that the club has.

"Of course, they're going through a difficult period but, make no mistake, that's a club that has to be winning championships. It has to be winning trophies and that's the pressure with coming and playing or working for Manchester United.

"That's the level they need to be back to. I'm sure they'll do the right things to get them back to that place."
