Serbia star hits back at 'angry' CR7

World News

Following his controversial goal-line clearance over the weekend, Serbia defender Stefan Mitrovic has had his say on Cristiano Ronaldo's furious reaction.

On Saturday, Serbia pulled off a dramatic 2-2 come-from-behind draw against Portugal during the nations' 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying match, in an encounter that was marred by a controversial incident in the dying minutes of the clash.

With just seconds remaining on the clock, Ronaldo appeared to have netted the winner for the reigning European champions but the match officials deemed that his effort had not crossed the goal-line, with Mitrovic on hand to effect the clearance.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner was furious at the decision and subsequently stormed off the pitch before the final whistle had blown, but Mitrovic shared his view that the correct call was made.

"Ronaldo has his own view of the situation," Mitrovic said, per Novosti. "He can be angry but I don't think the ball crossed the line. We are happy to have earned a point in the end, but we are not very satisfied as we went for the victory."

However, it later emerged that Portugal had every right to feel aggrieved by the decision as, upon inspection of video footage, match official Danny Makkelie apologised to Selecao boss Fernando Santos after admitting that the wrong decision was made.

"According to FIFA policy, all I can say is that I apologised to the national coach, Mr. Fernando Santos, and to the Portuguese team for what happened,"

Makkelie told A Bola h/t AS. As a referee team, we always work hard to make good decisions. When we are the centre of the news in this way, it does not satisfy us at all."

Following the weekend's result, both Portugal and Serbia have four points at the top of Group G after the opening two rounds of qualifying, with both nations set to be in action again on Tuesday evening when they meet Luxembourg and Azerbaijan, respectively.
