World News

After Lionel Messi said Robert Lewandowski deserved to win the 2020 Ballon d'Or, it seems the Bayern Munich star might be able to get his hands on the prestigious award after all.

Paris Saint-Germain attacker Messi clinched a record seventh Golden Ball on Monday after beating second-placed Lewandowski and third-placed Jorginho to the prize.

After receiving the 2021 accolade, Messi sparked a conversation when he said the Poland striker deserved the 2020 edition of the award, which was cancelled by France Football due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"You [Lewandowski] deserve your Ballon d'Or,"Messi said during his post-win speech.

"Last year, everyone was in agreement to say that you were the big winner."

Those comments seem to have stuck in the minds of the organisers of the prestigious accolade, with France Football editor-in-chief Pascal Ferre since revealing that they have not ruled out the awarding of the 2020 Golden Ball.

"We don't have to rush this decision," said Ferre, per news outlet Watson

"We can think about it long and hard.

"We can't be sure whether Lewandowski would have won the Ballon d'Or last year because there was no vote.”

Fellow Bayern star Thomas Muller also expressed his dissatisfaction about the result of this year's ceremony.

"What happened at the Ballon d'Or is unfortunate," he said, per Barca Universal.

"It’s very similar to what happened with [Franck] Ribery in 2013.

"This motivates me to bring the Champions League back to Munich and show the world what German football offers.

"The perfect opportunity is against Barca next week."
