The Norwegian's reported €75 million (R1.3 billion) release clause comes into effect in July 2022, and many believe he is likely to leave Dortmund, who have already crashed out of the UEFA Champions League this season, at the end of this campaign.

According to Manchester Evening News, Red Devils boss Rangnick has spoken to the 21-year-old's father regarding a potential transfer, with the German tactician said to have an established relationship with Alf-Inge Haaland from when he was sporting director of Red Bull Salzburg – in fact, he oversaw Haaland's move to the Austrian side from Molde in January 2019.

In his first press conference as United manager on 3 December, Rangnick revealed how well he knows the BVB talisman.

"Erling Haaland is a fantastic striker," he said at the time.

"I know best myself, because I was together with the people at Salzburg with my friend Kristoff and the people there were a little bit involved in the move from Molde to Salzburg, and therefore I know what kind of player he is."

United are understood to have an eye on a big attacking signing at the end of the season, with the likes of Edinson Cavani, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and Paul Pogba all entering the final six months of their contracts with the club, while Anthony Martial has also made it clear that he wants an exit from Old Trafford.
