Sterling has struggled for regular game time under Pep Guardiola this season, especially following the record arrival of Jack Grealish, who also operates from the left side of attack, from Aston Villa during the latest transfer window.

The England international recently expressed his frustration at his lack of minutes, and revealed that not only would he be open to leaving the Citizens, but would also consider a move abroad, with Barca said to be favourites to secure his signature if he does leave Manchester.

Teammate Kevin De Bruyne shared his sympathy for out-of-favour Sterling during a press conference ahead of the club's UEFA Champions League tie against Club Brugge on Tuesday night.

"Rotation is important because playing four competitions and mostly going far in them, it's a tough ask sometimes," the Belgium superstar said.

"I understand the frustration because I'm a player and you have some players who need more rhythm to get into it and maybe Raz [Sterling] is someone who needs more, I'm a player that needs that also.

"Sometimes it's tough to play one game yes, one game no. Obviously, it's the manager who has to make choices and it's very hard.

"We have a group of 22, 23 internationals who are unbelievable. Whoever you pick, you will be right a lot of the time. Whenever the team plays good, there's not a lot you can't say as a player."

Sterling has made 11 appearances across all competitions for City so far this season, but started six of those matches from the bench.
