Liverpool deny signing African wonderkid

World News

Liverpool have reportedly dismissed claims that they have signed an African wonderkid, who has since completed a move elsewhere.

Earlier this week, it was reported that teenager Abdul Fatawu Issahaku had signed for the Reds from Ghanaian second-tier club Steadfast FC for a fee of £1.5 million (R29 million).

It was claimed the 17-year-old, who was also said to be a target for Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen, was set for an immediate loan spell at Sporting Lisbon after signing for the Anfield club.

However, the English giants have reportedly denied all claims in this regard, and insisted they are in no way involved in the transfer.

"LFC [Liverpool] have not signed Ghanaian teenager Abdul Fatawu Issahaku and loaned him to Sporting – despite some reports to the contrary," The Athletic's James Pearce wrote on Twitter. "For a start, they can't as he's u18.

"He's joined Sporting on a permanent. LFC adamant they have no involvement and no commitment to take him in the future."

The teenager, who was named Player of the Tournament at the 2021 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations earlier this year, has since signed for Sporting Lisbon on a permanent deal, as confirmed by Portuguese newspaper Record, and will initially join up with the Liga NOS champions' reserve team.

Post-Brexit regulations do not allow for clubs in England to sign overseas players until they are 18, which means Premier League sides have to look to the local market should they wish to sign underage footballers.
