'Messi isn't fighting like Ronaldo is'

World News

A striking comparison has been made regarding Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo's efforts for Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United, respectively, so far this season.

In the most recent transfer window, the pair, who have dominated the Ballon d'Or winner's list and UEFA Men's Player of the Year awards over the past decade, both secured surprise exits from their previous clubs.

Since moving, the duo have gone on to experience different spells of form – Messi has only four goals in 10 matches following some niggling injuries and an initial slow start to life in Paris, while Ronaldo has found the back of the net 10 times in 14 appearances for the Red Devils.

Former Real Madrid star Rafael van der Vaart has now made a bold claim about their pair following PSG's lacklustre 2-1 defeat to Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night.

"It's a question of desire. Does he [Messi] want it or not?" the retired Netherlands midfielder asked on Dutch TV channel Ziggo Sports, per Marca.

"When you compare him to Cristiano Ronaldo, one is fighting to take his team to the next level – and one isn't.

"Messi walks now and then. I look at him and think, 'Aren't you ashamed?'

"It makes me sad. I'm just getting annoyed with Messi.

"It already started a bit with Ronald Koeman [at Barcelona]. It was actually a refusal to work, that is not normal for such a player.

"And that's a shame, because a player like this will never be born again."
