The veteran fullback, who was a regular feature for the Catalan side between 2008 and 2016, returns to the club after spells with Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, and Sao Paulo.
Alves will wear the No. 8 shirt for the Blaugrana this season, with his return following the homecoming of manager Xavi Hernandez, who has made the 38-year-old his first signing, although the Selecao star will only be able to play for the club from January.
In humorous fashion, Alves turned up for his presentation wearing a suit and sandals – a nod to the first time he signed for the Catalan giants in 2008, when he also wore flip-flops – and addressed the Blaugrana faithful in attendance before signing his contract out on the pitch.
"I never imagined this. I was telling my friends that the first time I came is unforgettable, and I think this time it's also going to be unforgettable," Alves said, per Barca Universal.
"I'm excited, it is my biggest challenge. I know that people expect the worst of me, not the fans, but from outside... I tell them to be quiet, my strength comes when there are doubts about me.
"I respond on the pitch, on this pitch.
"I asked [ex-Barcelona stars Hristo] Stoichkov and [Andres] Iniesta for permission to wear the No. 8."
