France star facing prison sentence

World News

A France star who was part of the squad that recently won the UEFA Nations League is now set to spend some time in prison.

With several notable footballers having trouble with the law in recent months, including Olympique Lyon defender Jerome Boateng and Manchester City's Benjamin Mendy, yet another high-profile player is facing the might of the legal system.

Bayern Munich star Lucas Hernandez is set to spend six months in prison for failing to obey a restraining order imposed on him and his girlfriend by a Madrid court in 2017 after the couple was involved in a violent argument that led to the latter being hospitalised, according to Marca

The charge lined up against the player, who was playing for Atletico Madrid at the time, is for breaching that order as he went on holiday with his girlfriend just months after being prohibited from having that sort of contact with her.

Hernandez was subsequently arrested at the Madrid airport upon their return from the vacation, but his girlfriend did not suffer the same fate as her restraining order had not been formally served.

In December 2019, Hernandez was handed a jail sentence of six months by a Madrid court as a result, but now, having failed in an appeal against it, he has been summoned by the same court and will be sent to a prison of his choosing, according to AS.

It is further reported that the Les Bleus defender will appear in court on Tuesday, 19 October, and must report to prison within 10 days thereafter.

It has also been claimed that his current club Bayern had no knowledge of the matter until this month, so it remains to be seen how they will respond.
