Egyptian club threatens to boycott top flight

World News

An Egyptian Premier League side has threatened to walk away from the competition following a refereeing decision that did not go in the club's favour.

Having lost 10 of their 21 league matches so far in the latest EPL campaign, Ismaily FC currently languish in 15th position, just above the relegation zone on goal difference.

Things are not looking good for the Ismailia outfit as they have failed to win their past six matches, losing three and drawing just as many.

On Friday, they faced Arab Contractors, a club that is below them on the league table but tied with them on points, with the two teams playing out a goalless draw.

That tie was not without drama, though, as Ismaily had a penalty shout late in the match.

With the incident being ignored by the match official without consulting VAR, that decision, or lack thereof, has sparked a startling reaction from Ismaily, who have now threatened to boycott the Egyptian top flight for the rest of the season.

"The Ismaily board of directors is disappointed with the refereeing mistakes that the team suffered from against Arab Contractors," the club said in an official statement, according to KingFut.

"The referee, Amin Omar, did not award us a crystal-clear penalty in the latter stages of the game and the fact that he did not consult VAR to review the incident raises questions about his integrity.

"As a result, the board decided to file a complaint against Amin Omar and his assistants, requesting the Egyptian Football Association to investigate the matter and take necessary measures.

"If no action is taken against the referee, Ismaily's board of directors have decided the club will not play its remaining league games."
