With the 2021 Ballon d'Or winner set to be announced tonight, France Football editor-in-chief Pascal Ferre has revealed what Cristiano Ronaldo ambitiously told him about winning the prestigious prize. 

The Manchester United superstar currently trails Lionel Messi in terms of Ballon d'Or wins as he is one Golden Ball behind the Argentina captain, who has won the famous prize a record six times.

Both players are once again in contention for the honour following yet another prolific year of football, during which the pair made the switch to new clubs, with Messi joining Paris Saint-Germain from FC Barcelona, while the Portugal international returned to Old Trafford after a 12-year hiatus.

Ferre, the editor-in-chief of France Football, who are the organisers of the award, has now revealed what Ronaldo said to him about the coveted accolade in relation to arch-rival Messi. 

"Ronaldo has only one ambition and that is to retire with more Ballon d'Or awards than Messi," he told The New York Times. 

"I know because he told me."
