Cristiano Ronaldo will retain the captain's armband for Portugal despite his on-field outburst during Saturday's 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Serbia.
Portugal coach Fernando Santos has confirmed that Ronaldo will retain the captaincy for the Selecao after the five-time Ballon d'Or winner drew criticism for throwing the armband on the floor during the weekend's 2-2 draw against Serbia.
Ronaldo was aggrieved at the match officials' decision not to award what would have been a match-winning goal for Portugal and stormed off the pitch before throwing the armband on the ground in frustration.
The 36-year-old's reaction was subsequently called out by critics, including his former national teammate Fernando Meira, but Santos has insisted that there will no changes to the nation's leadership following the incident.

"Yes, he will keep the armband. Forever," said Santos said, per Sky Sports. "Cristiano is a national example. If he had offended the manager, his team-mates or the federation in a thoughtless attitude, then we would have to address the situation. But nothing like that happened.
"It was a moment of huge frustration. And we are talking about a player who is unbeatable when it comes to his eagerness to win.
"Nobody will say now that his reaction was beautiful, but there's no point to discuss if Cristiano should remain the captain. That's something I want to be very clear about."
