In doing so, he became the first male player from the European continent to reach a century of goals on the international stage, and only the second overall behind former Iran international Ali Daei, who netted 109 times.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner achieved the milestone on his 165th appearance and went on to add to his tally during the match, netting again in the 79th minute to ensure Portugal's victory.
