David Beckham's Major League Soccer side Inter Miami have pulled off a remarkable coup after acquiring the services of 2018 FIFA World Cup winner Blaise Matuidi.
On Thursday afternoon, the MLS debutants confirmed that Matuidi, who played alongside Beckham during their time together at Paris Saint-Germain, had signed for the club less than 24 hours after his departure from Serie A champions Juventus.
"I couldn't be happier to welcome my friend Blaise to Inter Miami," Beckham, who is Miami's president and co-owner, told the club's official website.
"He is an exciting and gifted player and a great person. To have a World Cup winner of Blaise's quality in our new team is such a proud moment – for us as owners and for our fans. For me personally, to have a former teammate joining our club is very special and I can't wait to welcome him and his beautiful family to South Florida."
The club revealed that Matuidi had been signed through Targeted Allocation Money, which the league describes as "funds strategically provided by the league to teams to add or retain players that will make an immediate impact on the field".
It has also been confirmed that the 33-year-old Les Bleus star has been assigned to an international roster slot, pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate, and will wear the club's No. 8 jersey for the season.
