Barca wonderkid 'rejects' Morocco

World News

An FC Barcelona wonderkid has reportedly rejected an approach from Morocco to switch his allegiance, amid interest from one of Europe's biggest footballing nations.

Ilias Akhomach recently wrote himself into the history books as one of the youngest players ever to play for Barcelona when he made his debut for the LaLiga giants against Espanyol during new manager Xavi Hernandez's first game in charge two weeks ago.

This feat seemingly caught the attention of the north African country, and rumours began to emerge that the nation was ready to give the teenager, whose parents were both born in Morocco, his senior debut in a bid to prise him from Spain's clutches.

However, the latest from Marca suggests that the winger is eyeing a potential career with Luis Enrique's La Furia Roja instead.

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation reportedly held several video calls with the player, but the response remained the same.

"Thanks, but I want to play for Spain," the 17-year-old said, per Morocco Latest News.

Previously, Akhomach left the door open to Morocco regarding his international future despite representing Spain at U16 and U18 level, but appears to have changed his mind now.

While the Atlas Lions seemingly miss out on the young star, they do have two other up-and-coming Blaugrana forwards in Abdessamad Ezzalzouli (19) and Zacarias Ghailan (19), who have both represented Morocco's junior national teams, to perhaps look forward to in the senior team's colours.
