The accolade was merged with the Ballon d'Or between 2010 and 2015, but has been a stand-alone award since 2016. According to The Athletic, the men's awards are based on players' achievements between 8 October 2020 and 7 August 2021.
Ronaldo is one of five Premier League players to be nominated, and will be hoping to replicate his fortune in 2016 and 2017, when he won the prize on back-to-back occasions.
Two other previous winners, Messi and Lewandowski, will be hoping to clinch their second titles following their prolific displays over the considered period.
During that time, the Argentina captain clinched his first-ever Copa America title and also finished as the player of the tournament as well as the top goalscorer, and was also the leading scorer in the 2020/21 LaLiga campaign with 30 strikes.
Lewandowski, who won the prize in 2020, topped the scoring charts in the Bundesliga, smashing Gerd Muller's record of 40 goals in a single league campaign, with the Polish striker finishing the 2020/21 season with 41 strikes to his name.
He has continued his blistering form in this campaign, having already scored 24 goals in 18 matches across all competitions for the Bavarians, and is once again a favourite for FIFA's biggest individual accolade.
With the ceremony set to take place on 17 January 2022 in Zurich, Switzerland, other nominees up for the prize include Erling Haaland, Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappe – scroll through the gallery above to see them all!
