Manchester United were handed their first defeat in the UEFA Champions League group stages at the hands of Istanbul Basaksehir on Wednesday evening.
United were targeting a third straight win in the group stages of this season’s Champions League, and handed a tournament debut in goal to Dean Henderson, with Donny van De Beek and Anthony Martial among the other key changes.
Basaksehir stunned the Red Devils on 12 minutes when former Chelsea and Newcastle United striker Demba Ba raced onto a through ball before getting the better of Henderson with a low strike.
The Turkish doubled their lead before the half-hour mark five minutes to halftime as Edin Visca, who set up the opener with a thumping strike from a clever ball off possession turnover from Juan Mata.
United reduced the deficit on 43 minutes when Martial attacked a well-weighted cross from the left-side by Luke Shaw to head home from inside the centre of the six-yard area.
Starring defeat in the face, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made a substitution at the start of the second in Scott McTominay who replaced Axel Tuanzebe.
Paul Pogba, who started on the bench, and Edinson Cavani were next to enter from the dugout in place of Mata and van De Beek in the middle of the second stanza.
The late pressure from the Red Devils almost paid dividends as a header from Harry Maguire from Shaw’s corner forced Alexandru Epureanu into a goal-line clearance, as United went down in Istanbul.
