Liverpool were handed their first loss in the UEFA Champions League group stages after going down 2-0 to Atalanta on Wednesday evening.
Mohamed Salah, who had tested positive for Coronavirus headlined Liverpool’s starting eleven as Roberto Firmino started from the bench with the visitors reducing Duvan Zapata to the dugout too.
Robin Gosens went close to give Atalanta the lead in the opening ten minutes after latching onto a floating pass down the left-flank by Cristian Romero, but Alisson Becker parried.
Alejandro Gomez was next to have a go moments later with a shot from the edge of the six-yard area following possession turnover by the Reds, but drilled beyond the far post.
Atalanta continued to control proceedings in the latter part of the first half, with a driving run from Josip Ilicic pressurizing the home side’s defence.
The side from Bergamo grabbed the lead towards the midway stage in the second half after Ilicic maintained a surging run to the back-post to dispatch Gomez’s cross past Alisson.
In need of a turnaround, Liverpool called on more firepower from the bench on 61 minutes as Firmino, Fabinho, Andrew Robertson and Diogo Jota entered.
It proved immaterial as the Nerazzurri doubled their lead shortly before the last 20 minutes of the match as Gosens charged at Hans Hateboer’s cutback across the area to slam past Alisson.
Liverpool looked to carve a rare opening minutes before fulltime, while Zapata went over the top from a shot-on-turn after meeting a cross from Matteo Pessina.
In the end, the Italian side wrapped up the closing minutes to bag victory and avenge the 5-0 hammering suffered in the reverse fixture.
