VVD pips Messi & CR7 to UCL award

Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk has been announced as the 2018/2019 UEFA Men's Player Of the Year, beating out competition from Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Dutchman played a starring role as the Premier League outfit secured their sixth Champions League title, where they beat the likes of Bayern Munich and FC Barcelona along the way.

The 28-year-old walked away with two awards on the night after scooping the Defender of the Season award.

Van Dijk was not the only Liverpool to pick up an award as Alisson Becker claimed the Goalkeeper of the Season accolade.

New Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong was named Midfielder of the Season following his impressive showing for Ajax Amsterdam last season.
