Barca are enjoying a fine run of form, having scored ten goals in their last two matches following a 4-0 El Clasico win in La liga and 6-1 drubbing of AS Roma in the Uefa Champions League, as they sit six four points clear at the top of their domestic League standings.
Likewise, German giants Bayern Munich top the Bundesliga standings having yet to taste defeat domestically this season, and sit top of their Champions League group following a 4-0 win over Olympiacos midweek.
And Scholes feels the two sides are a cut above the rest by far.
"Barca and Bayern are, I think, miles ahead of any team,” he told ESPN. “Real Madrid maybe, if on form, but I don't think there's anyone close."
Yet when asked who would emerge triumphant should the duo have to face-off, the former England international tipped the Spaniards to win, as they did in last season’s Champions League semi-final.
"We're talking about Bayern Munich being the team that are closest to Barca, and Barca destroyed Bayern Munich last year," he said. "They were much better than them.
"Have Bayern Munich changed anything to get closer? They brought Douglas Costa in, who looks a good player. I don't think they had [Franck] Ribery or [Arjen] Robben last year, Robben's come back. If they do come across each other, it could be interesting. You have to fancy Barcelona."
Barca entertain Real Sociedad in their next League fixture on Saturday as Bayern play host to Hertha.
