Haaland smashes United legend's record

UEFA Champions League

Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland has smashed a UEFA Champions League record previously held by Manchester United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Haaland, 20, climbed to the top of the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League goalscoring charts on Tuesday evening after he netted a brace in Dortmund's comprehensive 3-0 Group F victory over Belgian side Club Brugge.

The Norway international, who is the son of former Leeds United and Manchester City defender Alf-Inge Haaland, netted either side of a Jadon Sancho effort to take his tally to six goals in just four appearances in the UCL this season, ensuring that BVB walked away with all three points on the night.

More impressively, Haaland's opening strike also saw him break a record previously held by ex-Red Devils striker Van Nistelrooy and former Valencia star Roberto Soldado to become the fastest player to reach 15 goals in the competition's history.

According to BBC Sport, the 2020 Golden Boy winner achieved the milestone in just his 12th Champions League appearances across spells with Dortmund and former club Red Bull Salzburg, breaking the record by a margin of seven matches.

His tally of 16 goals in total has also seen him climb above some of football's most recognisable names on the competition's all-time top goalscorers list, overtaking the likes of Miroslav Klose, Zinedine Zidane and Michael Owen, among others.
