Roma keep top four dreams alive

Serie A

AS Roma kept their top-four hopes alive with a hard-fought 2-0 win over the reigning champions Juventus on Sunday.

Roma preferred one change in Justin Kluivert to Juve’s four in Martin Caceres, Mattia De Sciglio, Emre Can and Paolo Dybala.

Juventus looked for a sixth minute lead through a low shot from Juan Cuadrado from the right, but Antonio Mirante saved for a corner.

A fast-paced attack led by Cristiano Ronaldo 15 minutes in set-up Dybala, who forced Mirante into a stupendous save.

Roma stretched the visitors on 17 minutes after retrieving possession in the middle to set-up Kluivert, who cracked the crossbar from a tight angle.

Mirante pulled off another blinder on 28 minutes after pushing Dybala’s volley onto the foot of the post, but Roma made a strong end to the half.

Earlier in the second half, Roma missed a golden chance when a half-shot from Stephan El Shaarawy cleared the bar.

Juve had the ball in the net on 64 minutes after a cool finish from Ronaldo, but it was disallowed for offside by the Video Assistant Refereeing team.

The champions kept probing, as a low shot from Can on the left 66 minutes in forced Mirante into a save.

Action immediately turned to the other side after Wojciech Szczesny turned El Shaarawy’s curler over the bar.

Juve introduced their first change after 71 minutes when Rodrigo Bentacur came on for Miralem Pjanic.

Roma were in front on 79 minutes after Alessandro Florenzi connected with Edin Dzeko to chip the on-rushing Szczesny.

The Romans nailed a second in time added on after a quick counterattack brought in Dzeko who finished beyond Szczesny to confirm the win.
