'Signing Ronaldo was a mistake'

Serie A

Amid much speculation about Cristiano Ronaldo's future, a former Juventus president has now referred to the superstar's move from Real Madrid to the Turin club as "a mistake".

The Portuguese forward is rumoured to want an exit from the Bianconeri, having reportedly asked to start on the bench in his side's 2021/22 Serie A opener against Udinese on Sunday ahead of potentially finding a new club in this window, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Manchester City now appear to be the leading candidates in the race to secure the five-time Ballon d'Or winner's signature, and his reported demands to leave could be putting Juventus in a difficult position where they may be forced to sell their talisman.

However, ex-Juve president Giovanni Cobolli Gigli, who held the prestigious role between 2006 and 2009, has now insisted that the Italian club will be better off without Ronaldo.

"I've always been honest: signing Ronaldo was a mistake," the 76-year-old said in an interview with SerieANews.

"It's impossible to recoup the investment and it will remain that way.

"He's a great player, but I have to be honest – the sooner he leaves, the better for him and for Juventus.

"I hope that [Juve manager] Massimiliano Allegri knows how to continue using him like he did against Udinese. That is, with intelligence and when the game is in progress.

"Ronaldo hampers Juventus' attack. Without him, they can do excellent things in collective terms."
