Portuguese Primeira Liga side Belenenses have confirmed the signing of Thibang Phete on a two-year deal.
On Saturday evening, Belenenses announced that Phete's initial loan move had been made permanent ahead of the 2020/21 season, with the 26-year-old South African signing a two-year contract with the club.
"Phete was an excellent winter reinforcement loaned from FC Famalicão, and he has now signed definitively until 2022!" Belenenses posted on their official Twitter account, in Portuguese.
Cafu, as Phete is affectionately known, joined the club on a six-month loan deal from Famalicão in January and played a starring role as the Lisbon-based outfit successfully maintained their status in Portugal's top flight.
The Kimberley-born defender, who was predominantly used on the right-hand side of a three-man defence, made 15 league appearances for the campaign to help Belenenses end 15th in the league standings, two points clear of the drop.
Phete's impressive form prior to, and immediately after the suspension of the league, was of particular importance to the club's survival and included a run of three wins and two draws in his first five starts.
The former Stars of Africa graduate also played twice in the Taça de Portugal, although he was unable to help Belenenses' avoid a fourth-round exit at the hands of Chaves.
The 2020/21 campaign will be Phete's seventh season in Portugal, with the former Milano United starlet having previously enjoyed spells with Tourizense and Vitória Guimarães before joining Famalicão last year.
