South Africa is inching closer to having a representative in the Premier League again, with defender Nikola Tavares featuring on the bench during Crystal Palace's defeat to Liverpool on Wednesday.

For the second consecutive week, Cape Town-born Tavares was named on the substitutes' bench by Palace manager Roy Hodgson, this time for their clash against the Reds at Anfield.

The 21-year-old failed to make it on to the pitch, however, as Liverpool ran out 4-0 winners, with Hodgson electing to use only four of his five allocated substitutes for the encounter.

Tavares, who is eligible to represent Croatia and has represented the nation at youth level, has now featured on the bench three times for the Eagles, having also done so once last season, and could make his debut as Palace rotate their squad during the final stretch of the campaign.
